Peoples Bank Sponsors Shark Tank Scholarships

Budding entrepreneurial students at Catawba Valley Community College will get a chance to pitch their business idea to a panel of business leaders and potential investors during the college’s first ever “Shark Tank” event coming up April 20.

A take-off on the popular ABC reality show by the CVCC Emerging Entrepreneurs Club, the contest will identify and reward students who propose the best business ideas, said club advisor Gary Muller.

CVCC Foundation scholarships funded by Peoples Bank will be awarded to the writers of the top three business plans. First place receives a $1,000 scholarship; second takes home a $700 scholarship and third receives a $300 scholarship.

“In club meetings, in the Entrepreneurship Program curriculum and in the Small Business Center,  and at our Manufacturing Solutions Center, we stress that good ideas alone won’t always work,” said Muller, who also teaches business courses at CVCC. “A well constructed business plan is the first step to bring an idea to life.”

Proposals will be submitted to the Emerging Entrepreneurship Club by April 1. The semi-final round will take place on April 14 and the finals will be held April 20.

The club can also assist with developing a proposal and connecting students to resources on campus that can help them develop a viable plan, said Muller.

“Within CVCC there are so many resources which students—and others in the community—can access that will help them develop a good plan,” said Muller
