World-Class Kayaker & Documentary Filmmaker Speaks Oct. 6

Catawba Valley Community College’s Department of Developmental English and Reading and the Center for Teaching Excellence & Research will bring world-class kayaker and Emmy Award-winning adventure documentary filmmaker Dr. Doug Ammons to the college Wed., Oct. 6, at 2 p.m., in the CVCC Auditorium.

Ammons will present a slide show filled with fine outdoor adventure photography, showcasing everything from beautiful scenics to wild action. He will also share his uniquely poetic and insightful view of adventure sports and where they fit into our lives.

The presentation is free and open to the community.

Ammons is best known for his outrageous solo descents of highwater and extended Class V+ and VI runs. Named one of the top ten adventurers of all time by Outside Magazine, Ammons has done Emmy Award-winning adventure documentaries for National Geographic, ESPN, and the Outdoor Life Network. He writes regularly for adventure publications and published the book, “The Laugh of the Water Nymph” in 2005, voted one of the best outdoors books of the year by the National Outdoor Book Awards.

He is also an accomplished classical guitarist, martial arts expert, and father of five who holds a doctorate in psychology and degrees in mathematics and physics. A native of Montana, Ammons currently works for Ammons Scientific as editor of two prestigious scholarly journals.
