Stephanie Gabriel Memorial Scholarship Established

The Stephanie Lynn Gabriel Memorial Scholarship was recently established through the CVCC Foundation, Inc., as a memorial by her parents, Johnette and David Orr.

A 1996 graduate of Catawba Valley Community College’s Emergency Medical Science (EMS) program, Gabriel performed her duties as a paramedic in an outstanding manner until her untimely death as the result of an automobile accident on June 15, 2010, at the age of 43. With this scholarship, the Orrs, hope to provide financial assistance to individuals who are pursuing the profession that their daughter loved and in which she took great pleasure and pride.

Gabriel’s decision to obtain an EMS degree was a turning point in her life, according to her parents, David and Johnette Orr of Charlotte. She had tried a couple different vocations, but nothing seemed to fit, and she was never satisfied until she discovered EMS. She was a paramedic for 14 years with Catawba County. She took great pride in wearing her uniform and in using her empathy and abilities to help people needing medical assistance. Her parents said she considered all of the EMS staff and the medical services people she worked with to be part of her extended family.  They, along with her husband, Keith, and her dog, Casey, made her life complete. Keith Gabriel is a Catawba County resident.

Brandi Lynn Bare of Claremont, a first-year student in the EMS program, was presented the first Stephanie Lynn Gabriel Scholarship. Bare graduated from Charles D. Owen High School in Black Mountain, N.C. Her six years of work as a certified nurse assistant in nursing home and home health settings led her to pursue a paramedic career.

The scholarship will pay for tuition, insurance, fees, books and other items such as uniforms, physical exams and vaccinations as required for enrollment in the EMS program. The maximum award is $8,000 over a two-year period.

Recipients must be a resident of Catawba County and maintain a 2.75 GPA. Preference will be given to a student who might not be able to attend without assistance of this type.
