Sain Completes Kellogg Institute

Jerry Sain, Writing Center Coordinator, recently completed studies at the Kellogg Institute for the Training and Certification of Developmental Educators.

Sain joins a number of CVCC faculty who have earned certification through the Kellogg Institute based at Appalachian State University. The Developmental Education course is the nation's longest running advanced training program for developmental educators and learning skills specialists. The professional training consisted of two components: an intensive, four-week summer residence and a supervised practicum following the residency, carried out at the participant's home campus. The advanced professional training program supports practitioners from across the United States by expanding their knowledge and improving their particular developmental or learning assistance program. Participants are required to have at least one year's practice in developmental education or a related field.

Sain joined the CVCC faculty in 2005 serving as developmental English and college student success instructor. He currently works in the Learning Assistance Center as a learning skills specialist while helping CVCC students with writing, reading and English composition. In addition to coordinating the services of the Writing Center, he teaches English and coordinates delivery of College Student Success classes. Before coming to the college, he served as an academic counselor at UNC Chapel Hill and taught English and coached football for seven years in Lincoln County’s Public Schools.

He earned a bachelor’s degree at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he was an Arnold Award winner and named to the All-Atlantic Coast Conference Team and Football News All-American Team. He earned a master’s degree at Appalachian State University in Higher Education. He is former chairman of the Conflict Resolution Center and continues to serve as a volunteer mediator in Catawba, Caldwell and Burke counties.

He and his wife, Bobbie, live in Vale and have two adult children.
