Electronic Health Records System Program Director Named

Thad Sparkman was named to lead CVCC's new Health Information Technology Workforce Development Program which will prepare workers to implement and maintain electronic health records systems.

CVCC is one of three community colleges in the state selected to be part of a 21 college regional consortium that will train thousands of new health information technology professionals. The initiative is federally funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act and is directed at training and retraining workers to use, install and maintain electronic health records.  Health information technology professionals are in high demand, with many, good paying jobs and excellent potential.

Sparkman brings more than two decades of experience in health-care administration to the college. He served as associate planner for the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Salisbury, director of the clinic division of Baldwin Area Medical Center in Baldwin, Wis., and clinical supervisor of Hazelden Center for Youth and Families in Plymouth, Minn. He holds a master’s degree in business administration and is board certified by the American College of Healthcare Executives and the American Academy of Medical Administrators.

This new non-degree Health Information Technology program expected to begin at CVCC in September, fills a previously unmet skills gap: those who are experienced IT professionals with little medical knowledge, and those who are competent medical personnel with little information technology background. Delivered in a convenient online format, the program can be completed in six months and is available to a 37-county area in western North Carolina.

This program funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, and is administered by the United States Department of Health and Human Services, Office of National Coordinator under award number 90CC0078/01.
