Small Business Center Mini Series Can Help You Assess Your Readiness For Business Ownership

Catawba Valley Community College's Small Business Center will offer "Step Up, Startup," a mini series of five two-hour seminars designed to help you decide if business ownership makes sense for you, beginning Tues., May 18. To be of maximum benefit, participants are encouraged to attend all, but may pick and choose the seminars that most interest them.
 
Offered on Tuesday evenings at 6:30 p.m. on the CVCC East Campus, "Step Up, Startup" seminars include:
 
·         "The Right Stuff," May 18:  Participants weigh the pros and cons of starting a business, including their personal skill set, experience, personality, life goals, current and future financial needs and tolerance for risk.
 
·         "Customers and Market Reach," May 25:  Participants will discuss three avenues for effective market research: the industry, the target customers and the competition. They will also explore what is meant by a unique competitive advantage for their business.
 
·         "The Power of Promotion and Selling," June 1: Learn how successful business owners brand their companies and market their products and services effectively in order to reach their customer targets.
 
·         "Keeping $core," June 8:  Learn standard scorecards for tracking business health and performance. This seminar highlights the importance of money management and clarifies key financial concepts, including what is meant by positive cash flow, break-even and profit and loss.
 
·         "Getting It Up and Running," June 15:  The final in the series, this session deals with the nuts and bolts of running a business: the business entity; local, state and federal regulations; location and up-fitting; funding sources; people, policies and procedures; and help from outside experts.
 
All seminars are held in Room 1209 of the Job Link Center on CVCC's East Campus and are funded by tax dollars and provided at no cost to participants. Call the Small Business Center by noon on the day of the seminar to reserve your seat, 828-327-7000, ext. 4112.
