Resident Writers Series Authors Peeler & Owens Read From Their Books

 

Catawba Valley Community College's Center for Teaching Excellence and Research (CVCC CenTER) is launching a Resident Writers Series highlighting the published work of its faculty and staff.
 
The first reading will feature authors Tim Peeler and Scott Owens on Tues., April 20, at 6:30 p.m. in the CVCC Library located on the second floor of the Dunbar Bldg. on the main campus in Hickory. This event is free and everyone is welcome.
 
Winner of the Jim Harrison Award for contributions to baseball literature, Peeler has published five books of poetry and two regional baseball histories. He will read from his most recent collection of poems "Checking Out." Along with Robert Canipe and Carter Monroe, he wrote "Writers on the Storm: Stories, Observations, and Essays," a collection of prose related to southern culture. He was a finalist for the Casey Award for Best Baseball Book of the Year in 2000. Peeler has taught English at CVCC since 1992 and served as editor of "Sanctuary," a literary journal formerly published by CVCC. He currently serves as the director of the Learning Assistance Center.

Born in Greenwood, S.C., Owens has authored five collections of poetry and is the founder of Poetry Hickory. The editor of the "Wild Goose Poetry Review," he writes the weekly poetry column "Musings," is regional representative for the North Carolina Writers' Network and vice president of the Poetry Council of North Carolina. His work has received awards from the Academy of American Poets, the N.C. Writers' Network, the N.C Poetry Society and the Poetry Society of S.C., and has been nominated for two Pushcart Prizes and a Best of the Net Award. He is the author of "Paternity," "The Fractured World," and three chapbooks of poetry. He teaches English and creative writing at CVCC and most recently served as editor of the college's forthcoming literary journal, "Catawba."
