Poetry Submissions For Black History Contest Due Jan. 29

Submissions of original poetry are currently being sought by Catawba Valley Community College for a poetry contest in conjunction with the college’s annual Multicultural Celebration in Honor of Black History in February.

Submissions are due January 29, 2010.

The grand prize winner will receive an all-expenses paid trip to Selma, Ala., in March to celebrate the 45th anniversary of "Bloody Sunday." The event, which interrupted the 1965 Civil Rights march to Montgomery, Ala., is described as the political and emotional peak of the modern civil rights movement. The travel-study experience is part of CVCC’s Hands-on History Project.

The poetry contest is open to area elementary, middle and high school students, as well as CVCC students. This year’s theme for elementary and middle schools is “Black History—I Dare to Dream.” The theme for high school and CVCC students is “Black History—The Individual and the Challenge.”

Winners in each category will receive a trophy and their entries will be published in the Celebration in Honor of Black History Month event program.

The CVCC celebration is held each year as an opportunity for CVCC students, faculty and staff and the citizens of the Catawba Valley to celebrate Black History Month by recognizing the cultural heritage and contributions to the community as a result of diversity.

For more information about any of these events, contact the CVCC Multicultural Affairs Office at 828-327-7000, ext. 4578 or 4282.
